Melanism is an undue development of dark-colored pigment in the skin or its appendages and is the opposite of albinism. The translucence of this albino stingray specimen will hopefully give way to a much larger and more opaque body color which will make this elasmobranch look very much like an angel. The lack of pigmentation on this albino colored stingray allows the many rays of the body and the internal body structure to be readily visible but it also masked certain traits that would help to identify this species of Raja stingray.
